A frequent question from my patients is: how will I be prescribed antibiotics if the consultation I had was by video?
On May 27, 2010, the Official Gazette of the Federation published the agreement for the sale and dispensing of antibiotics in Mexico and regulated art. 226 section IV of the general health law which stipulates the sale of antibiotics with medicines only with a prescription.
This regulation states that pharmacies will keep a record that does not require authorization by the Ministry of Health, but will be subject to verification. There it is also specified that the Prescription can be physical or digital and must only contain the name of the person who prescribes it, his / her professional identification, address and, if the prescription is to be retained, assign a consecutive number that relates it to the pharmacy record.
In 2011, the Health Commission of the Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the issuance of electronic medical prescriptions, in order to promote the use of information and communication technologies for the benefit of the population.
In accordance with the provisions of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), and as published in the General Rules for the electronic processing of permits for the use of special recipe books for drugs of section I of article 226 of the Law General de Salud (published in the Official Gazette), special electronic recipe books are allowed for group 1 controlled drugs or narcotics.
For all this, electronic prescriptions are valid and current in Mexico.
