To learn more about this condition, it is important to know what the thyroid gland is and what it is for.
It is a gland that is shaped like a butterfly 🦋 and is located in the front of the neck. Their job is to form thyroid hormones which help the body use energy, maintain body temperature, and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working normally.
✍🏼 WHAT IS HYPOTHYROIDISM?
The thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone to keep the body functioning normally. Hypothyroid people have too little thyroid hormone in their blood. Common causes are autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, surgical removal of the thyroid, and radioactive treatment.
🥱 WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
When thyroid hormone levels are low, the body’s cells cannot receive enough thyroid hormone and body processes begin to slow down. Due to this, you could easily notice tiredness or fatigue, dry skin, constipation, drowsiness, hair loss, depression. Because symptoms are so varied, the only way to know for sure if you have hypothyroidism is to have laboratory tests.
🥙 WHAT ABOUT THE DIET?
Care should be taken with some foods as they can interfere with the uptake of iodine or act as antagonists with medical treatment, mainly cabbages, and crucifers.
