Do you like to have cereal for breakfast every day? Undoubtedly, cereal is a very convenient and very simple food to incorporate into our diet, but is it good to consume it regularly? The answer is:
It depends! Cereal is healthy if you choose wisely.
A good cereal can have as much protein as an egg, the same amount of fiber as oatmeal, and about the same calcium as a cup of yogurt, if you add low-fat milk.
A not-so-good cereal can be high in sugar, low in fiber, and high in protein.
To make sure your breakfast cereal is healthy, look for one with at least 3 grams of fiber (4-5 grains is much better) and less than 8 grams (2 teaspoons) of sugar. If you have been consuming an unhealthy cereal until today, you can start the transition little by little, mixing two portions of cereal: one with better nutritional values and the usual one.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that even if a cereal has good nutritional values, you must control the portions. Excesses can be as harmful as eating sugary cereal.
